Bush Dictates “The Pearl Harbor of the 21st Century” (Late Evening)

After delivering his Oval Office address to the nation, and before walking to the White House residence for the night, President George W. Bush dictated an entry for the White House daily log. He recorded that the Pearl Harbor of the 21st century had taken place that day, that officials believed Osama bin Laden was responsible, and that other targets in the United States were suspected. He added that he had urged the country to return to normal and that a terrorist could not be allowed to hold the nation hostage. The dictation captured the administration’s working assessment at the close of the first day, hours after the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center had reached the same conclusion about al-Qaeda.
